The Sister State relationship between Maryland and Anhui Province is the State’s most enduring, having been launched in 1980 by then-Maryland Gov. Harry Hughes and then-Anhui Party Sec. Wan Li.

INITIATIVES

Over the last 40+ years, the Maryland-Anhui Sister State Committee, working with the Anhui Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has developed and managed programs that have encouraged exchange and cooperation between the two jurisdictions across a wide range of areas, including agriculture, trade, tourism, education, culture and healthcare.

Through the years, the Maryland-Anhui Sister State Committee and its counterpart in Anhui have produced numerous, high-profile and impactful programs.

FUTURE PLANS

The Maryland-Anhui Sister State Committee is coordinating with a higher education working group (including representatives from University of Maryland College Park, Salisbury University, Goucher College and the Maryland Higher Education Commission) to produce a virtual Maryland-Anhui Higher Education Forum (date TBD, but sometime during Fall, 2021).

The Forum will be a platform for the presentation of, and agreement on, a series of bilateral and multilateral exchange programs involving Maryland and Anhui-based higher education institutions, potentially including joint degree programs, English language virtual classes, an online faculty forum, and Anhui-Maryland cultural exchange centers.
